Effect of spent mushroom compost (Agaricus bisporus) silage processing on its chemical composition, digestibility and ruminal fermentation kinetic in Mehraban sheep

Abstract

This study was conducted in vivo to investigate effect of processing (soil removal and molasses addition) on chemical composition, digestibility and ruminal fermentation kinetic of spent mushroom compost silage (SMCS) using Mehraban sheep. Experimental treatments consisted of 1) SMCS with 7.5 % molasses, 2) SMCS with 15 % molasses, 3) soil-free SMCS with 7.5 % molasses and 4) soil-free SMCS with 15 % molasses, which were examined using a completely randomized design with a 2×2 factorial arrangement. The chemical composition and fermentative characteristics of the silages were determined after 60 days. Then, silages digestibility was determined in vivo and their ruminal fermentation kinetics were investigated using in vitro gas production method. Results showed that soil removal of SMCS resulted in a decrease in its crude protein (from 7.65 to 6.53 %) and ash (from 46.46 to 36.40 %) contents (P<0.05). Moreover, soil removal of SMCS increased its organic matter digestibility (from 45.32 to 49.00 %) and molasses addition increased NDF digestibility (from 27.31 to 32.23 %) and that of ADF digestibility from 21.95 to 25.05 % (P<0.05). Both soil removing and molasses addition increased the asymptotic gas production (A) of the silages (from 34.73 to 38.18 ml and from 34.70 to 38.20 ml, respectively). Molasses addition enhanced also the dry matter degradability (from 79.22 to 84.07 %) of the silages (P<0.05). Generally, separation of soil from compost reduced ash and crude protein percentage and increased organic matter digestibility and asymptotic gas production in the compost silage.
